TripAdvisor is a whopping 16 years in business this year and its longevity is testament to its business model which was revolutionary when it first started out. At the time, user-generated-content on travel marketing websites was virtually non-existent. Keep in mind that social networks were not that prevalent, in fact, it took a full four years later in 2004 for Facebook to be invented!

The user-generated-content-model has made the world’s largest travel community website what it is today. The site gets 2,600 new topics posted on its multiple forums every day, it hosts more than 46 million photographs and has expanded from one single site, to 23 other TripAdvisor branded travel media sites.
