I have to admit that when I read this news report entitled Malta should seek Halal Tourism, Labour MP says, I was taken back and somewhat confused.

Was this guy serious? Doesn’t he know that according to at least one study, tourists are avoiding to fly and holiday in Islamic countries?

Wait. Let me take a step back.

The backbone of tourism is hospitality and by definition, hospitality requires that the host accommodates the guest and makes them feel as comfortable as possible.

Then again, accommodating guests belonging to the Islamic faith is not just about eating halal. That would be as easy (or difficult?) as catering for gluten-intolerant guests.

What we need is to understand well the culture (and its sub cultures) to be able to offer respectful accommodation. Perhaps this is something that small boutique hotels and holiday apartments/villas are ideal for?
